The candidate will be responsible for core documentation for Oracle Linux and related virtualization products with a focus on container technologies (including Kubernetes, Kata, Docker, Podman, Istio and Prometheus). The candidate is likely to be assigned to work on Oracle Linux Cloud Native Environment documentation, but may be required to work on other Linux product documentation as needed.
The ideal candidate should have strong and demonstrable knowledge and understanding of:
Oracle Linux or Red Hat Linux
Container orchestration software such as Kubernetes
Virtualization technologies such as KVM or Oracle VM VirtualBox
Product documentation requires hands-on testing and an ability to deploy and explore test environments. We use tools like Vagrant and Ansible to help automate some of this work. Most of our team are comfortable reading, modifying and, to some extent, writing shell scripts. We expect a high level of technical competence for this role and the candidate must be able to demonstrate comfort working on the command line without assistance. Frequently we are at the forefront of the development process and there is a lack of upstream or internal documentation about the content that we are working on and the candidate should expect to research what the development and testing team are doing directly to write the very first documentation on how to use the product.
Our documentation is currently produced in Docbook source format, so experience with this (or with a similar open XML format, such as OASIS DITA) is desired. Demonstrable ability to work wtih XML is required and ideally some ability to use XQuery would stand the candidate in good stead. We maintain our own document build infrastructure and if the candidate possesses skills that we can use in this area, we would additionally involve the candidate in projects to improve our toolchain and our publication methodology. Tools make use of XSLT, Python (and currently some Ruby and Perl), Makefiles and some Bash scripts. Any candidate with skills or interests in tools and these areas would be a benefit to our team, particularly if the candidate shows knowledge of XSLT.
We currently use OxygenXML to author our documentation. Experience with this authoring tool is useful, but not required.
The candidate should be willing to work flexible hours in a relatively self-managed way.Our team consists of home workers, and while the candidate may have opportunities to go into a local Oracle office to work, the ideal candidate should be capable of working from home in a globally distributed team.
